Sharing the Good News on the Internet

I find the subject of communication fascinating and wonderfully complex. In this age of digital communication and the Internet, the book of Proverbs still is true and is a veritable treasure trove of excellent communication principles. As I consider my Facebook updates, my tweets, and my blog posts and replies, I like to keep these ancient teachings in mind.

The Good News Is Refreshing…

“Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land.” ~ Proverbs 25:25

How appropriate this is for today! When Solomon penned these words, news from a distant land was rare and took weeks to arrive. When my wife and I were dating, she spent a summer in Africa; we’d wait two weeks for an answer to our letters to each other which made for some interesting and tense days of waiting.

Today, news from a distant land arrives in seconds, but the effect can be just as refreshing… or devastating. As ambassadors of Christ from His “distant land,” we have the opportunity to bring good news to our friends and fellow citizens. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that “gospel” means “good news.” With that in mind, Prov. 25:25 becomes even more profound. There’s no better news than the saving grace of Jesus Christ!

And Beautiful

“A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.” ~ Proverbs 25:11

This verse cautions us to be careful with how we deliver Christ’s gospel, not just posting His good news willy-nilly all over the Internet.

When we present the good news of Christ appropriately it can be refreshing and beautiful.

As I write this, I’m involved in a long Facebook thread about homosexuality and legislation, which recently took a turn into a spiritual discussion. In my posts I’ve attempted to be gracious and open-minded, hopefully using golden words set in silver. Now that the notion of spirituality and the teachings of Christ are in play I hope that my attempts at being gracious will allow me to offer “good news” from a distant land.
